Pun Hlaing Golf Club (PHGC), designed by Gary Player and voted best course in Myanmar by Asian Golf Awards, carries the reputation as “The Pride of Myanmar” and No.1 Golf Club in Myanmar.
Word from Golf Director, Stephen Chick
The purpose of this brief newsletter is to keep members informed of what is happening at the club and what plans will be coming to fruition in the near future. Firstly, I have been receiving many positive comments about the improvements in the Golf course condition which I agree with and feedback (good or bad) is always welcome. Secondly, you will see we have new Flags and Tee markers, so if you are wondering if the pin is located front, middle or back as we have moved away from the previous colour system, please rest assured the caddies are willing to advise but the position of the Tee markers will indicate the pin position front, middle or back on that green. Example; front Tee markers = back pin, back Tee markers = front pin and middle Tee markers = middle pin.
November and December are 2 of the most action packed months on our calendar and we are excited to be hosting the SEASAC Junior Tournament this week, followed by the Annual British Chamber of Commerce Tournament 29th November and then moving in to December for our Annual Club Championship. Some exciting news is that you will see our Driving Range building is currently under renovation and we plan to launch a new Golf Academy with our own Resident PGA Professional in the coming months. Finally, if you have not seen the notices Pun Hlaing Golf Club is a member of the Pacific Links International network, this is the largest global reciprocal network which gives all PHGC members access to over 475 Golf courses with a 50% discount from the standard rate greenfee. This is in addition to recent agreements with Singapore Island Country Club and TPC Kuala Lumpur. For further information on any of this please do not hesitate to stop and ask me at the club or reach out to me.
Word from Agronomist Dan Green
Recently, the turf has benefited from multiple inputs including organic and slow release fertilizer applications together with preventive chemical applications to keep disease pressure suppressed. Also, since May 2019, we have significantly reduced insect populations which disrupt playing surfaces and apply preventive control to reduce future infestations. Investment in new machinery including a sprayer and sand pro bunker rake is paying dividends as this has enabled us to execute these applications with greater efficiency. You will notice we have levelled some tees on the back 9 and in 2020 many tees on the front 9 are planned as part of our ongoing annual improvement plan. Greens are faster to putt on now the wet season has passed. During the wet months it is essential to keep the greens alive due to lack of soil oxygen and very low UV light levels. This means we raise the height of cut of the grass creating slower greens but most importantly, the greens remained alive. No greens were lost this past season so now we can gradually lower the height of cut which in turn, will result in faster, truer greens with better ball roll. Just be aware of the increased break! Happy Golfing!
